ROTTERDAM - Netherland

Rereading the notes of the first Dutch day, you will find the following sentence: ``Sweet apple pie with cinnamon crumble and whipped cream and cinnamon ice cream all taken under the advice of the waitress who sold us the dish as Arnehm's specialty.`` Actually this cake can be found all over the south of Holland, and after a number of searches, requests for recipes from restaurant owners and threats to waitresses, we learn its name: Dudok taart.

Today we went back to Rotterdam to visit the world famous “Bojimahns” art museum. It was supposed to be huge, as a matter of fact, it’s not very big and, in my opinion, it cannot be considered an international museum. The artists were mostly Dutch and unknown, the rooms were poorly organized as you could find a painting from the 1400s next to one from the 1700s. Regarding the descriptions, at the entry of every room you could find things like “in the 15th century most of the paintings were landscapes”. No shit, I could see it simply looking at the displayed pieces! Next to the individual paintings there was a tag saying useless things like “in this painting the artist had depicted a fish and a potato”, again, no shit. We have to look for the meaning? Did he just want to fuck? (n.d.t. “potato” is another name for “vagina” and “fish” means “penis”) I expected more from such a museum.

After that we went back to Hoek von Holland to visit the locks, but the tours were full so we had to do a self-taught visit. Returning to the campsite we came across a “neighbourhood party”. One could enter other people’s houses and we had the chance to see pregnant cows and also pet newborn calves. There were sheep, chickens, rabbits, cows… beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

DINNER:
  • Mushroom soup
  • Soup of I-don’t-know-what (maybe horseradish)
  • Apple-crusted pork tenderloin with herb butter.

The Dudok is sold in any bakery.
